To inspire discussions at the Copenhagen Conference on Information Integrity, IMS has created a range of Solution Papers addressing key threats to information integrity. These papers don’t claim to offer quick fixes; instead, they provide practical, experience-based approaches to today’s most urgent challenges. Their common thread is the need for a multi-faceted strategy that reflects the complexity of these threats and relies on collective, strategic action by local, regional and global actors to ensure access to accurate, trustworthy and timely information for all.

Press release: Defending information integrity: A battle we cannot afford to lose

An introduction to information integrity and its scalable solutions

The concept of information integrity helps ensure a crucially important dual focus on reactive solutions that reduce the circulation of mis- and disinformation as well as proactive solutions that strengthen the production of reliable information, independent media and digital infrastructures that serve the public interest.

Good journalism
Access to accurate and reliable information in the form of public interest journalism is crucial to building better societies and economies. Independent public interest media offering accurate, relevant and timely facts, insights and analyses are a crucial antidote to dis- and misinformation and key to preserving overall information integrity.

Alternative platforms that serve the public interest
Alternative platforms must be designed and scaled with information integrity built in from the start. That’s why IMS works to advance a human-centred digital infrastructure model: supporting platforms and shared information systems built around the public interest.

Prebunking led by community-based coalitions
Traditional approaches to countering disinformation typically address malign narratives that have already taken hold in public discourse. This should be supplemented by efforts designed to debunk disinformation before it captures significant public agendas.

Coalitions and alliances
Coalition building is a platform upon which the collective good is advanced. IMS has identified the factors that appear to be of significance for the ability of locally driven coalitions to emerge and thrive.

Sustainable innovative financing
Independent media need public funds distributed as core support, which ensures financial stability, enabling media outlets to operate while they work to diversify revenues and build a financial runway for other forms of investment.

Policy and regulation with the public interest at heart
IMS strengthens independent media and civil society to hold governments and platforms accountable. We support litigation and build civil society alliances to safeguard freedom of expression, and engage in reform efforts and support the strengthening of institutional capacities of governmental entities to align national regulation with international human rights standards.

Safety of journalists and media freedom
Helmets, press vests and body armour can help safeguard journalists against physical harm. Meanwhile, targeted online persecution, lawfare and the subsequent mental health attacks that victims often experience are more insidious. Sustainable safety of journalists and media freedom is best achieved when all stakeholders work together locally, nationally, regionally and internationally.

Where is the money?

Catalysing private capital
This report responds to a rising demand from the media development field to understand how private capital can complement and strengthen traditional donor funding.
