Professor emeritus Guy Berger chairs the IMS board.
Previously, as a director at UNESCO, he helped secure the endorsement in 2021 of UNESCO member states of the Windhoek+30 Declaration on Information as a Public Good. He also led the co-convening (with WHO) of UN Inter-Agency Group on Disinformation, and he contributed to the development of the UN Global Principles for Information Integrity. He further:
• Oversaw the 2020 Broadband Commission report: Balancing Act: Countering Digital Disinformation while respecting Freedom of Expression.
• Co-ordinated the 2018 handbook: Journalism, Fake News and Disinformation.
Since retiring from UNESCO, he has contributed:
• Inputs on information integrity to the 2024-5 G20 processes.
• Guidelines for African election management bodies on countering disinformation (2023).
• Currently advisor to research into disinformation in six African countries.
